CONFEDERATE SOLDIER

Private in the 9th Florida Infantry Volunteers- CSA
CO E & H, Florida Brigade under command of Gen. Joseph Finnegan
General Mahone's Division
General Ambrose Powell Hill's Corps
General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia

Enlisted Jan. 1863
Fought in the Battle of Olustee, FL
Sent to Virginia on the 1st of May 1864
Arrived in Richmond, VA May 25, 1864
Went on the battle line at Cold Harbor
Held in reserve under command of Gen. Mahone with a MD Regiment.
In the trenches of Petersburg, VA by June 1864
Pvt. R. L. Roberts died sick in the Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond, VA- Aug. 1864.

Interesting coincidences:
> The CSS Hunley was sunk on Feb. 17, 1864.
> Reuben died Aug. 1864 in the Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond, VA and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery.
My great grandmother--Mrs. Harriett Johns Roberts knew that her husband Reuben had gone off to fight for General R. E. Lee in Finnegan's Brigade in Virginia. The widow and the family knew that he never came home from the war.
His grave was "unmarked" for 136 years.
R.I.P.

> The CSS Hunley was raised and taken to Charleston, SC Aug. 8, 2000.
> I researched the case of Reuben L. Roberts from 1995 to 2000. I found the widow's pension records in the FL State Archives in Tallahassee in early 2000 and traced his movements from Florida to Cold Harbor and to the trenches of Petersburg. I contacted the NPS and inquired about his burial and it looked like he could have been among the thousands of UNKNOWN Confederate soldiers buried in the Poplar Grove National Cemetery or at Blandford Church Cemetery. I contacted several members of the Roberts family in Florida.
> Reuben's grave was found and documented in Oakwood Cem. by Marcus & Veronica Roberts in the summer of 2000.

Memorial service and headstone dedication- Oakwood Cem.
