Curtis "Mac" Malcolm Shields
11/27/1925 ~ 8/29/2016
Kanosh, UT-Curtis Malcolm Shields, 90, a valiant son, husband, father and friend passed away August 29, 2016 in Payson, Utah.
He was born November 27th, 1925 to Curtis A. and Evalyn Shields of Delta Utah. He was the 1st of 5 children. He grew up strong from his life on a farm. Grandpa & Grandma Shields raised him to be a man of honor and integrity. In 1941, at the young age of 17, Mac left behind the security of home and family to serve his country in the United States Navy. He sailed the Pacific Ocean in the fight for freedom from New Guinea to Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Nagasaki.
Upon his return home in 1946, he met and fell in love with Cherie Haninifin. They married and brought 5 children into the world. Two of his daughters, Norma Evalyn and Karen Sue, returned to heaven only days after their births.
In 1958, Mac became a Trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol and served the people of Utah for the next 32 years. In the summer of 1963, Mac lost Cherie and became a widower with 3 children. In 1964 he met and married the second love of his life, Roena Brown Tuttle Hendrickson, a widow with 4 children. Together they raised their 7 children: York Shields (Sandy), Sheri Kae Thueson (Greg), Lana Nielson, Tim Tuttle (Ruth Ann), Mary Ann Steadman (Kevin), Dean Shields (Kris) and Claudeen Sutherland. He has 29 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.
He lost his second sweetheart Roena to cancer in 2006. Mom was the encouraging influence that gave Dad confidence in his callings. He has missed her for these past ten years.
Mac loved his family and would frequently call his children to let them know that he would never ever stop loving them and that he was the luckiest man on earth to be blessed with such a loving family.
Mac was a faithful disciple of Christ and served in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life. Mac and Roena served a full time Mission in Cove Fort and at the Oakland California Temple. They later served at the Manti Temple where Mac was called to serve as Counselor in the Temple Presidency. Mac knew that God lived and that Jesus Christ was real and loved us all. He trusted that right would prevail in the end. Mac was charitable and grateful. He saw God's tender mercies and worked to extend them to others in countless ways. He always tried to leave things better than they had been.
Our family would like to thank all of you for your love and support at this difficult time. We know our father will be greatly missed and that he has touched many lives over the years. He was a true gentleman.
We would also like to thank the staff at the Central Utah Veteran's Home in Payson, along with Bristol Hospice, for the phenomenal love and care they have given to our dad over this past year. He was so grateful to each of you for all that you did for him. You made it easier on our family just knowing that he was well cared for at all times. We will be forever grateful.
A viewing will be held Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Kanosh Ward Chapel from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
