Another one of the old pioneers has gone over the great divide, that of N. H. Burns, he died in the city of Galveston at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dr. Larkin. His last remains were brought to Albany of interment Monday, arriving at 2:40 p.m. funeral services were held at the Matthews Memorial Church. Rev J. a, Owen officiating. interment in the Albany Cemetery. Quite a large funeral procession accompanied his last remains to the cemetery, and all that was mortal of this honored pioneer was laid to rest beneath a bower of beautiful roses.
The deceased was born in the State of Connecticut, April 1844, hence was eighty-six years of age. He came to Shackelford county if we mistake not in the early eighties. For many years was engaged in the mercantile, milling and ranch business. Retired some twenty-odd years ago, and since the death of his devoted wife, Mrs. Burns has traveled extensively, spending part of his time in Amherst, Mas., Pauls Valley, Galveston and other points. it can be said that he was one of the most beloved men who ever lived in Albany and Shackelford count. Modest, unassuming, charitable, the real gentleman, nature's nobleman, and as Brother J. a. Owen said in his talk at his funeral he was a real friend. And that word friend awakens early day memory, and if you will pardon personal mention just for a moment --Many years ago we lived next door to Mr. and Mrs. N. H. burns, coming here entirely strangers, and in a strange land--- A struggling attorney, possessed of lots of ambition and dream stuff, but minus a clientele, so to make ends meet, kept a boarding house next door to Mr. and Mrs. Burns, and be is said that they took us in. Yes, loaned us dishes and chairs and cooking vessels to supply a much-needed want, then to cap the climax, Mr. and Mrs. Burns daughter Miss Gertrude, came and boarded with us, and so did Mr. and Mrs. Willard Lee, Jack and Muffett. And as a further help, through their influence, all the teachers in the Reynolds Presbyterian Academy came to board with us, and thus the boarding house was full to overflowing with nice folks. and while mother did the cookin, we washed the dishes, waited on the table and ran errands. And say, folks, that's one of the brightest spots along down the trail of memory. As it was said of Emerson, he did not need any religion, so it can be said of our departed friend N. H. Burns, the demand of church creeds and doctrine meant nothing to him-- He was nature's nobleman and loved all kind of folks. pardon this personal matter. it just seems to us that the picture would not be complete minus this framework in the picture
gallery of human biography. The News extends condolence to the bereaved family in their great sorrow. All the family was here to attend the funeral.
