Obituary for Rick Butler
Rick Butler, 62 of Exline passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.

Rick was born to Reggy & Betty (Vos) Butler on July 11, 1954 in Prairie City, Iowa. He received his education from Southeast Polk High School, graduating in 1972. Rick would further his education at Indian Hills Community College. On November 13, 1976, Rick was united in marriage to Vicki Wickett in Altoona. To this union was a son, Chad.

Rick was a member of Jackson Lodge #42 of Centerville, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Honor Guard of Altoona, Past Grand High Priest Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Iowa, and Albia Yorkrite.
Rick has dedicated his life to public service. At age 14, he joined the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Cadet Program. At age 18, Rick accepted a full time position with the Mitchellville Police Department, this made him the youngest full time peace officer in the State of Iowa at that time. Rick later served for the Altoona Police Department and as Chief of the Bondurant Police Department. In 1979, Rick accepted a position with the Centerville Police Department. He worked as a peace officer with the Centerville Police Department until 1984 when he accepted a position with the State of Iowa as an Investigator within the Department of Inspection and Appeals. Rick held his position until retirement in 2010. From the time Rick and his family moved to Centerville in 1979, he was very active in the community. Rick was a member of the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department and worked part time as an EMT with the Appanoose County Ambulance Service. Rick is credited with the inception of the Centerville Police Reserve Program in 1991. Rick joined the Cincinnati Volunteer Fire Department in 1992 and became Chief in 1996. He and his wife Vicki formed the Southern Appanoose County First Responders, which is still active today. After retirement from the State of Iowa, Rick worked part time for the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office as a Transport Officer and Deputy Sheriff until his health would no longer allow in 2015.

Rick is survived by his wife Vicki of Exline, son Chad Butler (Rachael) of Centerville, grandchildren; Wesley and Emily Butler of Centerville, mother, Betty Butler of Exline, sister, Regina Otto (Steven) of Centerville, brother-in-law Tom (Tammy) Wickett of Colfax, Iowa, brother-in-law, Doug Jones of Mitchellville, Iowa, Heart adopted daughter, Maisi Watts (Sam Maas) and grandson Jared Maas of Oskaloosa. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 5, 2016 at Faith United Methodist Church in Centerville. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Thomas Funeral Home – 501 N. 18th St. – Centerville, Iowa 52544. A Masonic service will take place at 5:00 p.m.; following the visitation. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Rick Butler Memorial, which will be designated at a later date.
