Clifford Alfred Gladden

Clifford was born on June 30, 1912, in Atchinson [Atchison], Kansas, and passed away in Fortuna, California November 19, 2004.

He was the tenth child born into a family that ended up with fourteen children. He worked with his family in plastering and construction, moving to the West at an early age. They first settled in Washington, moving on to Oregon and then into California. While working in Humboldt County, CA, he met and married Evelyn Walker. Following her untimely death he moved to San Diego for a short time with his brothers doing construction and plastering, returning to Humboldt County where he married Lois Owens in 1938. They lived in San Diego until 1941 when they moved to Oregon and began raising turkeys and grain for the army. At the end of the war they moved back to Humboldt County and formed a partnership with Art Gladden as ‘Gladden Brothers’ and continued working in construction and plastering. All together he worked in construction for over 62 years and farmed for 6 years.

Clifford loved to travel, going as far north as Fairbanks Alaska and as far south as close to Acapulco, Mexico. His goal was shortened by a washed out bridge. He traveled to all of the Western states, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, often traveling with his brothers whom he enjoyed very much. His love was to read the Bible, study the stars, camping, camp meetings, hiking (even in the desert, when in bloom), prospecting, fishing, boating, but most of all he loved his family. He especially loved children and enjoyed the sound of children playing, often quoting the verse, “a little child shall lead them”.

Clifford loved his God, his church, and his family. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for over 80 years. He was baptized by H. M. S. Richards Sr. while in San Diego. He was a member of the Fortuna SDA church for the last 57 years. He and his brother, Art, plastered the Fortuna church along with many other commercial and residential buildings in Fortuna. His desire was for all to learn of Jesus and be in Heaven for eternity. He often spoke of the reunion that would never end, spoken of in Revelation, and desired that all be there.

Clifford is survived by his wife of 66 1/2 years, Lois Owens Gladden; their children, Glenda Ward and special friend Douglas Crowl, Wanda Seiber, Donna Thom and husband John, Al Gladden and wife June; grandchildren, Clifford Ward and companion Carrie Davis, Corinna Ward, Tanya Reed and husband Jeff, Theresa Weltsch and husband Jacob, Tami Ward, Betty Noujaim and husband Salim, Diane Weinstock and husband Rob, Lois Simon and companion Joe La Casse, Carolyn Seiber, Troy Thom and wife Laurie, Sarah Roelof and husband Gerrit, Jennifer Stoltz and friend Brad Pitek, Jared Gladden and companion Lindsey Harris, Andrea Gladden; great grandchildren, Jeremy, Jacinda, Jeremiah and Colinda Ward, Dakota Sparks, Nichole McCarty, Jake and Eli Ward, Melina Ward, Phoenix, Orion, Sharatan Reed, Aida Noujaim, Michael, Amber and Sarah Weinstock, Desiree La Casse, Crystal and Deborah Simon, Aaron and Anna Thom., Dayna and Natalie Kendall; great great granddaughter, Natalie Ward; his brother, Burton Harris; and his sisters, Ruth Gurgel and Betty Thoman.
