Major League Baseball Player. For six seasons (1967 and 1971 to 1975), he was a catcher with the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, California Angels and Oakland Athletics. Born Charles Duane Sands, he attended Newport News High School in Virginia and was later selected by the Baltimore Orioles during the 1965 Amateur Draft. He was chosen by the Yankees as a Rule 5 player in 1966 and marked his Major League debut with New York at the age of nineteen, on June 21, 1967. After he was acquired by Pittsburgh, he found his niche as a backup to Manny Sanguillen and although sparsely used during the 1971 season, he experience a world championship with the Pirates. He recorded an at-bat during the 1971 World Series against Baltimore.
