RICHMOND - Joseph A. R. Mayo, 76, passed away, surrounded by his loving family, at Togus Springs VA Hospice, Chelsea, on August 25, 2016. He was born in Augusta on August 29, 1939, a son of Armand and Rita (Gendron) Mayo (deceased).Joe, also known as Bob, grew up in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1958. During High School, he played on the football team as the kicker and was called "the Toe".

Following graduation, Joe served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy and served from 1958 to 1962. He was stationed in Charlestown, Mass. and Norfolk, Va. He served on the "USS Constellation" and the "USS Wasp". His service was briefly extended during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Following honorable discharge, Joe settled in the Central Maine area. Much of his career was spent in the food service industry. He enjoyed all aspects of this environment, particularly cooking, the people and management. He worked at many area restaurants and worked long term, managing McDonald's Restaurants around the State.

The second half of his career was spent in retail, managing the Reny's Dept. Store in Gardiner for over 17 years. He was well known and loved in the Gardiner area. After retiring, he returned to downtown Gardiner working part-time at The Village Jeweler.

Joe was dedicated to service in his community, as well. He was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus Council and Assembly. During his many years as a Knight, he served as Grand Knight of the 3rd Degree, Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree, and Sir Knight in Regalia. Joe was also known as the "Chief Chef" with the Council and led many Chicken Pie Suppers and other Council Cooking activities.

Joe was a man of great faith and his religion was very important to him. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Gardiner for many years.

He enjoyed all sports and was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriot's fan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Gail E. (Cromwell) Mayo; two daughters, Maria L. Jewett and her spouse Jon and Meagen A. Mayo and her spouse Luci Levesque; his siblings, Anita Pettengil, Raymond Mayo, Sr., Joanne Hisler, Jean Robinson and Jim Derocher; granddaughter, Kaylah M. Neptune and her fiance Ronald Reny II; great-grandchildren Taylor O. Neptune, Ryder J. Neptune-Reny and Nolan J. Neptune-Reny; and many other relatives and friends.

The committal service with military honors will be at the old Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.
