Kathryn Margaret Hughes Churchill, 79, of Black Mountain, N.C., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday at Black Mountain.

Born June 2, 1909, at Hood River, Ore., she married Irving Churchill July 27, 1935, at Muskegon, Mich. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan in 1931 and received a second undergraduate degree from there in 1932. For over 30 years Mrs. Churchill was a librarian in various institutions including Coe College, Cedar Rapids Public Library and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing Library. She was a member of Cedar Rapids College Club, Chapter IH of PEO, Iowana Council of Camp Fire Girls, League of Women Voters, Ladies Literary Club and Wednesday Shakespeare Club.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Malcolm of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Margaret of Black Mountain; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Warren Wilson College Presbyterian Church, Swannanoa, N.C. The body will be cremated, with burial in College Church Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church, Swannanoa, N.C. 28778.

FOUR COE FACULTY MEMBERS TO RETIRE

Kathryn Churchill, who has been Coe’s catalog librarian since 1966, will also leave Coe at the time of her husband’s retirement.

She earned her BA degree and a BA degree in library science from the University of Michigan and has served in various capacities of library work. Prior to coming to Coe, she was head librarian at the Kenwood branch of the Cedar Rapids public library from 1961-66.

The Churchills plan to leave Cedar Rapids this summer for North Carolina, where Dr. Churchill will teach at Warren Wilson college in a suburb of Asheville.
