John Koert Lovell, 84, Korean War Veteran
Following a brief and courageous battle with cancer, John Koert Lovell died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on August 23, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 84.
John is survived by his wife of 64 years Josephine, children John K. Lovell Jr (Imilse), Wellington, Florida, Jeff Lovell, Pendleton, Indiana, Lavina Layne, Indianapolis, Indiana, Marissa Moss (Jerry), Chicago, Illinois, and Jason Lovell (Lisa), Carmel, Indiana; his fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; and siblings, Janice Callis, Phyllis Roberts (Pearle), Joyce Ruesch (Gene), and Wally Cox (Marge).
John was born on January 16, 1932 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late John W. Lovell and Thelma Cox, lifelong residents of Indianapolis, Indiana where he grew up. He graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1950. He married Josephine Shattuck, his high school sweetheart in 1951.
From 1951 to 1954 he served in the U.S. Navy as a gunnery captain on the USS Walker and in the Naval Reserves during the Korean War. After an honorable service, John began working for Indianapolis Steel Warehouse in sales and completed a 50 year career in the industry after retiring in 2004 with O'Neill Steel. During that time, the couple welcomed five children and raised them in a loving home. John's children remember him as a kind and gentle father who always put others first before his own needs.
John was an accomplished basketball and baseball player for the Broad Ripple Rockets and in his adult years he was an impactful little league coach and an avid golfer who achieved a long time goal of his first hole in one at the age of 79. He was a generous individual who loved his kids and who was passionate about spending time with his grandchildren. He was an active and dedicated member of the North Park Masonic Lodge #646 and President of Prentice Little League. As a jazz music enthusiast, he often played trumpet and sang at local establishments such as the Capri and Lutz's Steakhouse where he will be remembered fondly as "Pops" Lovell.
