Beulah always considered the number 13 to be lucky for her. The baby of thirteen children, Beulah was born January 17, 1927 to Joe William Mabe and Beulah Richardson Mabe in the Dillard Community of Stokes County. She attended Pine Hall School and graduated in 1944 with a class of thirteen. She married the love of her life, Dixon Mabe, on November 7, 1947. Dixon was born on a Friday the 13 in 1922. The couple was blessed with four children.
Beulah began seasonal work for R. J. Reynolds in 1968 at their Brook Cove plant in Walnut Cove. Later she went to work full Time at their Whitaker Park location and retired in 1987 from the company's Tobaccoville facilities.
Beulah enjoyed sewing. She made her daughters' prom and wedding dresses. She loved flowers and found it hard to resist ordering bulbs from catalogs long after her ability to dig had declined. Her passion, however, was feeding her family and anyone else who happened to drop by. Beulah made great biscuits from scratch, usually thirteen. Up until the early part of 2016 you could count on her cooking enough food for an army each Sunday. She knew this would bring her family home.
