Mildred Nowels

Graveside services for Mildred Lillie Lee Nowels, 91, of Ringwood, was Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, Okla. The Reverend Brenton Haworth officiated. Arrangements were by the Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

Mildred Lillie Lee Nowels was born March 8, 1914 to Solomon Cicero Burlison and Laneta Grace (Carter) [sic - s/b Leah Belle Osborn] Burlison on a farm west of Fairview, Okla. and passed away on May 9, 2005, at the Fairview Municipal Hospital in Fairview.

Mildred was reared west of Fairview and graduated from Fairview High School in 1931. She married Wilson M. Nowels on June 8, 1935, in Fairview. They made their home in or near that community until moving to the Ringwood Community in the fall of 1947. Her entrance into the teaching profession was in 1943 when she was employed as an emergency teacher for the new Forrest Home School, a position she retained until 1949.

Mildred earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Northwestern State College in Alva and a Masters Degree in Education degree from Phillips University in Enid. She has done additional graduate work in physics and chemistry at Northwestern and a mathematics course offered by Oklahoma State University.

In 1952 Mildred began teaching at the Ringwood Schools, teaching science in high school and the sixth and seventh grades. Her huband, Wilson, passed away in 1957. After his death, Mildred became sole manager of their farm and cattle operations west of Ringwood.

In 1963, she was selected as a Major County Teacher of the Year. She was the first county teacher of the year to be selected by the entire membership of the Major County Education Association. Mildred continued as an eduator in the Ringwood School system until her retirement in 1970. She then became a member of the Major County Retired Teachers Association. Mildred continued to live on her farm west of Ringwood until the time of her death.

Mildred is survived by her brother Frances Burlison of LaSelva, Calif. and several nieces and nephews.

She as preceded in death by her parents, husband Wilson M. Nowels, four brothers, A.C., Roy, Grady, Bill and one sister, Stella.

Memorials can be made to charity of choice with the Fairview Funeral Home Inc. acting as custodians.
