Mary Ann (Sherrill) Evans was born 25 May 1833, Lawarence County, Indiana. Her father was Richard Evans. Her mother was Nancy Ann Toone. The family moved from Indiana to Wapello County, Iowa about 1846. In 1852 Richard and his family began on a journey on the Oregon Trail. On 13 may 1852, Mary Ann married James Sherrill In Potowatamie County (probably at Council Bluffs, the starting point for wagon trains leaving for Oregon). The Donation Land Claim Act would allow them each to claim 320 acres in Oregon. They settled in Linn County near the Willamette River. Between 1880 and 1885 The family moved from Linn County, Oregon, to Clark County, Washington where they established another farm. Between 1887 and 1896 they moved to The Dalles, where Mary Ann died 13 October 1896. James later lived with his son Hugh in Linn County, where he is on the 1900 census. He lost his eyesight, and went to live in Amboy, Clark County, Washington, with his daughter Ann Elizabeth Sherrill Barchus. He died there 1 Nov 1913 and is buried nearby at the Mountain View Cemetery.
