Sir Robert Wingfield III of Upton in Northamptonshire was the son of Robert Wingfield II, Esq. of Upton and Elizabeth Cecil.
Robert was commission at the command of his uncle, Sir William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley and Lord High Treasurer of England to be an eyewitness of Mary Stuart’s execution on 8 February 1587. Of all the accounts of Mary Stuart’s execution, the most important is arguably that prepared by Robert Wingfield III of Upton. At the time Robert was a Member of Parliament for Stamford and new Keeper of Fotheringhay Castle’s royal park.
Robert Wingfield III of Upton served many years as Member of Parliament for Stamford, 1584-1604 and was knighted by James I of England on May 11, 1603 at London Charterhouse. He was married to Prudence Croke of Chilton, daughter of Sir John Croke, MP of South Hampton and Elizabeth Unton.
Robert died at Upton, Northamptonshire on August 24, 1609 and is buried in the Church of St. Kyneburgha in Castor, Northamptonsire. Robert’s Will was proved in London on February 6, 1609/10 by his son eldest Robert Wingfield IV (Prerogative Court, Canterbury, Reg. Wingfield, 35.)
