Martha Bowlin Euzene "Mattie" Alley was born on Nov. 28, 1862 in Milam Co., TX, to John Henry and Mary Elizabeth (Stewart) Alley. She married John Wesley Lantrip on Dec. 18, 1879 in Milam Co. The couple lived in the Liberty Community, a farming settlement near Milano, TX.

Mattie and John Lantrip had nine children, all of whom lived to marry and have children: Mary Alma (Lantrip) Hildebrandt, Sarah Maud (Lantrip) York, Lillie Edell (Lantrip) Reese, Mattie Pearl (Lantrip) Bullock, Johnnie Robert (Lantrip) Nicholson, William Wesley Lantrip, Sr., George Alley Lantrip, Henry Bertram Lantrip, and Jewell Clydelle (Lantrip) Jacob.

The Lantrip family ate biscuits and cornbread, as well as vegetables and fruits they grew and canned themselves. They also ate homemade pork sausage, heavily seasoned with sage, and fried chicken or chicken and dumplings.

Mattie, a Methodist, took her Christian duty seriously. She frequently fed the poorer prople in the neighborhood, though the Lantrips were far from well off themselves. One man ate with them every Sunday for free, while he griped about the food. One of the Lantrip children would carry milk every day to a poor family who had small children and no cow.

Martha Bowlin Euzene "Mattie" (Alley) Lantrip died on Aug. 8, 1935 in Milam Co., TX, and is buried there in the Liberty Community Cemetery next to her husband, John Wesley Lantrip.
