Elvira Tisthammer was born Dec. 12, 1949 to Eustacio Chavez and Priscilla Garcia-Chavez in Socorro, NM and died at her home on Aug. 18, 2016. Elvira married Russell Tisthammer on Sept. 29, 1969 in Albuquerque, NM. They lived in Wichita, KS, Minnesota and New Grove, NE. They had made their home in Portales since 1981.
While in Wichita, she received a cosmetology license. She worked at the Portales Beauty Salon for seven years. Later she attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, and received her Business Associates Degree. She continued her education in Elementary Education and Nursing classes at Clovis Community College.
Her passion for art and deep love of children led her into teaching Art at James Elementary School for eight years. Recently, she has been a substitute teacher for James Elementary, Brown Early Childhood Center, Portales High School Daycare and at Valencia Elementary School. Her hobbies included gardening, painting and watching the beautiful sunrises and sunsets we have in New Mexico.
Elvira and her husband, Russell, are active members of the Floyd United Methodist Church in Floyd, NM. She taught Adult Sunday School classes, Children's Sunday School classes and during Vacation Bible School. Elvira also planned many live Nativities with children as the stars. Elvira was a member of La Escalera Art Guild, the Portales Art Club, the Clovis Desert Cruisers, the Antique and Classic Car Club and also of Leadership Portales in 2015 and 2016.
Elvira was able to complete her "Bucket List" when she was a contestant on The Price Is Right! It was a highlight of her life!
She is survived by Russell, her husband of nearly 47 years of their home; two sons, David of Las Cruces, NM and Aaron of Portales; one granddaughter, Davina (Uriel) Garcia; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Brayden and Amaya Garcia; two sisters, Mary Ellen (Don) Stewart of Melrose, NM and Maria Jo Stewart of Portales; two brothers, Mike (Patti) Medvitz-Chavez of San Acacia, NM and Rudy Chavez of Albuquerque, NM; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Jake, who passed into heaven in 2010, at the young age of 20 as the result of cancer.
