Donald Eugene Shipp, Jr. was born on October 22, 1919, in Plain Dealing, LA and passed away on August 15, 2016 at the age of 96. Don was the son of Donald E. Shipp, Sr. and Eunice Holeman Shipp. He grew up the oldest of 4 children on the family farm in Haughton, LA.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 from 5:00-7:00pm. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Officiating will be Fr. Paul Martin of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Interment with military honors will follow the service. Chancellor Shipp had a thirst for knowledge throughout his life. He received his B.S. in Mathematics education from Northwestern State University in 1940; Master's degree in mathematics in 1949 from LSU Baton Rouge; and his Ph. D. in education with a mathematics minor from LSU Baton Rouge in 1958. Dr. Shipp served as Director of the Bureau of Educational Materials and Research and was an Associate Professor at LSU Baton Rouge from 1959-1964. In 1964 he was named Professor and Assistant Dean of the College of Education, at LSU Baton Rouge. Don's greatest career accomplishment came in 1965 when he was appointed Dean of a new branch to the LSU System, LSU-Shreveport. The school property was just a cotton field when he moved his family to Shreveport in the summer of 1966. LSU-S officially opened in 1967 with the fall semester. In 1973 Dr. Shipp was named Chancellor of LSU-S, when the school became a 4 year university, serving there until his retirement in 1979. The LSU Board of Supervisors named him Professor Emeritus and Chancellor Emeritus of LSU-Shreveport.

After receiving his B.S. degree in 1940, Chancellor Shipp taught Mathematics in the Bossier Parish School System. While teaching at Plain Dealing High School, he met the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth DeMoss. They married in June 1941 and spent the next 75 years together. Dr. Shipp also served as the first principal of Waller Elementary School in Bossier City, LA.

Dr. Shipp was a member of numerous Professional and Honorary Organizations. He authored and co-authored several books, booklets, and articles as well as being a lecturer and consultant for many educational conferences at the state and national levels. To support his community and the LSU educational system, he served as chairman and board member of organizations that included the American Red Cross, Shreveport Rotary Club, and Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. He made more than 125 speeches, mainly regarding LSU, to Shreveport area civic and professional clubs and schools.

Chancellor Shipp retired from LSU-Shreveport in June 1979 to spend more time with his family and pursue other interests. Of enjoyment were his numerous hobbies which included photography, genealogy, painting, wood working, and a stained glass craft and design business. Dr. Shipp used his skills to design and construct a stained glass window which he donated to the LSU-Shreveport Library in 1981. He also created, assembled, and installed stained glass windows at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Shreveport in the late 1970's and early 1980's. His talent can still be found in the numerous stained glass lamps, panels and windows he made for family and friends.

Dr. Shipp was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 75 years, Mary Elizabeth on May 30, 2016; his sister and brother-in-law Martha Shipp Tooke and Nick Tooke; his brother and sister-in-law Dr. James Herbert (Bud) Shipp and Laconia Shipp; and his brother Kenneth O. Shipp.

Also surviving him is his sister-in-law Ruth Shipp and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express its appreciation to Dr. Larry Clark, Chancellor of LSUS and the LSUS Foundation. We also thank the caring staff at Live Oak Health Center especially Tomekia, Candice, Keisha, Raymond, and Tangela of Willis-Knighton Hospice Care.
