Anthropologist. She is known for founding the field of medical anthropology. She served as the first president of the Society for Medical Anthropology. She did fieldwork in many locales but is best known for her groundbreaking work with the Navajo tribe of the American Southwest. Among her many publications are The Navaho Door, coauthored with Alexander Leighton, and The Navaho, coauthored with Clyde Kluckhohn. The Navaho Door is considered the first ever publication in the field of medical anthropology.
