Augusta, GA – Dr. Paul D. Mahoney, 78, entered into rest on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family. Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 20, 2016 at St. Mary’s-on-the-Hill Catholic Church with the Rev. Lou Lindsey celebrant. Interment followed in Westover Memorial Park with Navy honors.
He is the son of the late Mrs. Marcella Cronin Mahoney and Mr. Patrick J. Mahoney. Dr. Mahoney was born in Boston, MA on May 10, 1938. Dr. Mahoney grew up in Stoughton, MA and attended St. Mary’s Elementary School, Coyle High in Taunton, MA, Stonehill College in Easton, MA, Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University in Chicago, IL. He completed a rotating internship at Albany Medical Center Hospital, Albany NY. Upon completion of his anesthesia residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY in 1968 he entered the US Navy Hospital in Portsmouth, VA where he met his future partner, Dr. Robert Horseman.
After serving in Vietnam with the 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Division and after returning to Augusta, GA, he and Dr. Horseman started the Westside Anesthesia Group at Doctor’s Hospital in 1973.
He was a member of The American Society of Anesthesiologists, The Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists, Richmond County Medical Society, Medical Association of Georgia, and the American Medical Association.
In 2000 he resigned from his practice at Doctors Hospital due to health reasons and pursued his passion for archeology by becoming a member of The Augusta Archaeological Society. He continued to broaden his collection of southeast Indian artifacts. He also published an article in the Central States Archaeological Journal.
He was preceded in death by his brother Lawrence P. Mahoney and his son-in-law Rance E. Perry. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Audrey Gregory Mahoney, daughter Laura M. Perry, son John P. Mahoney both of Augusta, granddaughter Laura Bryson Tedford of New York, sister-in-law Anne Mahoney, brother William J. Mahoney, brother Joseph W. Mahoney (Aline) and many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Mahoney was a member of the VFW 3200, American Legion 192 and worked extensively with the Georgia War Veteran’s Nursing Home, and the VA Hospitals. He also contributed to many charitable organizations and individuals throughout his life.
Dr. Mahoney’s interests included bass fishing at Clark Hill, weekend tailgating at the Georgia Bulldog football games, and his enthusiastic love for the game of golf.
He and his wife Audrey hosted the Bloody Mary Brunch every Saturday of Masters for many years which kicked off the annual Mahoney Worldwide Open Golf Tournament at West Lake Country Club.
