Joseph was born in Alexander City, Alabama to Mabel Meadows Malone. He was raised by his grandmother Caroline Meadows and uncle, Helius Meadows.
Joseph enlisted in the regular Army in 1955 and received numerous service awards and accommodations. He remained in the military for thirty years. He retired in 1985 with the rank of CSM.
Joseph married the love of his life Shirley Mills in 1961. To this union four children were born. Joseph enjoyed fishing, grilling, gardening, wrestling, NASCAR and traveling to Las Vegas and Inn of the Mountain Gods.
Joseph was preceded in death by his grandmother Caroline and mother Mabel. His wife Shirley, sister Elizabeth B. Hogan, brother Henry L. Malone and sister Mary June Thomas.
