Garden designer, horticulturalist and gardeninglegend. Born in London, she and her family moved to Bramley in Surrey. By 1861 she had enrolled in the South Kensington School of Art and became a talented artist and painter. In 1868 the family moved to Berkshire but after her father's death, she moved back to Munstead, Surrey where she began the first of her 400 garden designs. In 1896 she met a young architect, Edwin Lutyens, who designed her house Munstead Wood. She also wrote numerous books as well as over a thousand articles in magazines. Whilst many of the gardens she designed no longer exist, Glebe House in Woodbury CT, USA, Hester Combe in Somerset and her own Munstead Wood remain. Busbridge is on the outskirts of Godalming, Surrey.
