Martha Durham Martin, 75, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, August 7, 2016, with her husband at her bedside. The daughter of Elisha & Mary Durham, she was born on January 12, 1941, in Morton, Pennsylvania.
Martha traveled extensively with her family to Chicago, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, New York, El Paso Texas. She lived in Germany for 4 years, upon returning lived in California and then settled in Painesville.
Martha was employed as a supervisor at Gary Allens Sportswear in Painesville until they closed in 1976. After leaving Gary Allens, Martha was then employed at Fischer Body Euclid of General Motors until her retirement in 1993. She and her husband owned and operated several small businesses in Painesville and Mentor until her final retirement in 2006.
She was a proud supporter of Painesville City Schools and was a mother to those who were not her own. She was a firm believer in education. She loved to crochet, was a loyal Cleveland Cavaliers fan and an avid WWE fan. She was a lifetime member of the NAACP. She enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and two children, son Ronald Martin Jr. and daughter Dawn Vazquez; and siblings, William Durham, Sally Ferguson, Elsie Thompson and Joan Derry.
Surviving family members include husband Ronald Martin Sr.; children, Kenneth (Carla) Martin of Painesville, William Martin of Painesville, Malcolm (Camille) Martin of Houston, TX, and Cynthia Martin of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Elijah Vazquez, Lashonda Martin Clark, Canela Vazquez, Jessica Martin, Angela Lynn, Ashley Martin, William Martin, Epiphany Compton, and Tyrell Compton; eight great-grandchildren; and siblings, Rose Moseley, Elisha Durham, James Durham, Barbara Ferguson, Betsy Jennifer and John Durham and numerous friends who will miss her dearly.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Jeanette Sanchez-Martin as well as Yvette Askew and The Hospice of the Western Reserve for the outstanding care and endless support that was given to Martha.
A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, August 13, 2016 at St. James Episcopal Church, 131 N. State St., Painesville, OH 44077. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
