Lee worked for Capital Airlines prior to its merge with United Airlines in 1961. He had a 35 year work history as a customer service representative; first at Washington National Airport, Baltimore National Airport and lastly at T.F. Green Airport. Needless to say he held a private pilot license. Aside from his airline career, he proudly served during the Korean War in the United States Army; furthermore he was a member of the American Legion.
Deep below his thick skin and stubborn personality, Lee played a pivotal role in many children and young adult's lives. He was the co-founder of the Hill Farm Little League where he personally erected the former little league playing field and was a dedicated coach for the Coventry Little League baseball system for many years.
When he had downtime, Lee was either playing golf or sitting in his recliner and watching television, usually vintage movies, for hours at a time.
He is survived by two children: Mark Payne (wife Heidi LeBlanc-Payne) of Coventry, RI and Monica Payne (wife Diane Amaral-Briggs) of West Warwick, RI; four grandchildren: Rebecca Payne-Eddy, Christopher Payne, Ryan LeBlanc and Jake Payne and one great-grandchild: Hannah Eddy and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother: Hallie Payne and sister Margaret Crawford.
Funeral from Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, RI on Wednesday, August 10 at 9:30 AM followed with A Mass of Christian burial at Saints John & Paul Church, 341 South Main Street, Coventry, RI at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , PO Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908 or to Boys Town National Headquarters, 200 Flanagan Boulevard, PO Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 68010.
