Carol Ann (Porter) Payne, 82, with her family by her side, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at home. For 59 wonderful years, she was the wife of Clinton Payne of Coventry, RI. She was born in Meadville, PA to the late William G. and the Florence E. (Lippert) Porter.
After graduating from St. Agatha's High School, Carol attended Spence Hospital School of Nursing.
During this time she had worked at the Meadville Tribune Newspaper, but had a different interest. She became a flight attendant for Capital Airlines, presently United Air Lines, after graduating from McConnell Airline School in Minneapolis, MN. Capital Airlines was based in Washington D.C. and this is where she and Clinton "Lee" had worked also, they married in 1957. Lee was also employed by Capital Airlines and company policy would not allow husband and wife to work together. So she left the airlines and they moved to Rhode Island with their two children. She attended and graduated from Rhode Island Junior College as a Licensed Practical Nurse and went on to have a lengthy 30 year career as an LPN with Kent Hospital retiring in 2004. After retirement, Carol started her own business call "Naturally Yours", an in home fitter for mastectomy prosthesis and enjoyed making women feel and look natural after surgery.
She was a member since 1975 of XL Alpha a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, an international sorority for women of which held many different roles in office both in Maryland and in Rhode Island. She was active with Saints John and Paul Church where she enjoyed handling the envelopes, mail and the end of the year bizarre. In her down time she enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading and traveling.
She is survived by two children: Mark Payne (wife Heidi LeBlanc-Payne) of Coventry, RI; Monica Payne (wife Diane Amaral-Briggs) of West Warwick, RI; four grandchildren: Rebecca Payne-Eddy, Christopher Payne, Ryan LeBlanc, Jake Payne; great granddaughter: Hannah Eddy; a brother: Michael Porter and his wife Patricia and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral from Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, RI on Wednesday, August 10 at 9:30 AM followed with A Mass of Christian burial at Saints John & Paul Church, 341 South Main Street, Coventry, RI at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. At the request of the family, if possible, any pink accessory or clothing worn during this time would be appreciated in remembering Carol.
