Samuel W. AXTELL, son of George R. and Amanda (FARNHAM) AXTELL, was born in Knox county, Ohio, June 17, 1850; died at Clearwater, Fla., Feb. 18, 1918; aged sixty-seven years, eight months and one day. He came to Greene county, Indiana when quite young and was educated in the common schools and in Indiana University, graduating from its Law department about 1872. Feb 16, 1871, he was married to Mary J. GRAY, a student in the university and after her graduation, they located in Bloomfield, and here he engaged in the practice of law until the summer of 1898. In the meantime he served a term as prosecuting attorney of Greene and Sullivan counties, and also served a term of years as county superintendent of the Greene county public schools. He was an active member of the Bloomfield Christian church, serving as one of its elders and as superintendent of its Bible school for nearly twenty years. He was very energetic and progressive in all civic affairs and one of the leaders in every enterprise for the up building of the community. He left Bloomfield in 1898, and after spending a few years in Hoopeston, Ill., he located in Winnipeg, Canada, where he remained until failing strength made it necessary for him to leave in quest of health. He sought healing in the genial climate of Florida, but it was in vain and the end came on Monday morning, Feb. 18. His wife passed into the Great Beyond in 1910, and in his loneliness he has often expressed a desire and willingness to follow her. These children were born to Mr. and Mrs. AXTELL: Aden, who died in infancy; George W. of Schenectady, N. Y.; Casper B., of Lexington, Ill.; Ilie SMITH, of Bloomfield; Maude EDMONDS, of Chicago; and Neta ROSSMAN, of Chicago. He has a surviving brother, Dr. Bryan C. AXTELL, of Kansas City, Mo., who was here with the family. Mr. AXTELL was large hearted, genial, jovial, the kind of a man boys and girls fawn upon and remember with pleasure as long as they live. His remains were brought from Florida by his children to Bloomfield and after funeral services at the Christian church on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 21, attended by a large crowd of people in sympathy with the family, his remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Bloomfield cemetery, til the resurrection at the last day.
