Reported age at time of death was 32 years, so evidently born about 1839. Daughter of John Rogers & Jane Amoret (TOWNS) DAWSON, and appears as Mary E. DAWSON, aged 9 years, in their 1850 census household in Russell's District, Muscogee County, Georgia. Mary Ella DAWSON married 16 JUN 1864 in Muscogee County, Georgia, to Julius J. CLAPP, who survived her.

Mary Jane Galer's list of persons interred in the New Cemetery area of Linwood shows: Mrs. J. J. CLAPP, female, born on the Wynnton Road, died aged 32 years; buried 20 NOV 1871 in Section A, Lot 132 - Sexton James LYNAH.

"FUNERAL NOTICE. // The friends and acquaintances of Mr. and Mrs. Jno. R. DAWSON and Mrs. and Mrs. J. J. CLAPP, and families, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral of the latter, from St. Paul's Church, this (Wednesday) morning at 11 o'clock." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Wednesday, 22 NOV 1871, p. 3.]

Buster Wright's "Burials and Deaths Reported in the Columbus (Georgia) Enquirer [Newspaper], 1832-1872" (1984), p. 86, shows: Mrs. J. J. CLAPP, funeral notice, mentions Mr. & Mrs. John R. DAWSON (published 22 NOV 1871).

This grave is probably not identifiably marked. Other burials reported in Section A, Lot 132 are: Ethel (HIGGINS) BUNBY (1890-1966) & Miss Annie Belle REDD (1858-1945). Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book, Volume 2, p. 142, shows those two with marked graves in her Section G, Lot 78 ("REDD" on step). This lot is near the CLAPP family lot. If the CLAPP lot was full, they may have put Mary Ella in an empty space in the REDD lot - however, family burials continued in the CLAPP lot, so it seems likely the Sexton made a mistake and Mary Ella is actually in the CLAPP lot.
