Born to Thomas Clayson (1808-1889) and Frances Essom (1813-1885) - fifth of seven children. Eli married Rhoda Burris on May 3, 1866 just as they were leaving England for Utah. In July 1866 they joined the William Henry Chipman Company arriving in Salt Lake City in September 1866.
Eli and Rhoda became the parents of five children before he died of typhoid fever in 1877. Their youngest child died the month before Eli died.
