James Ervin Sloan departed this life August 4, 2016 at his home in Caruthersville, Missouri at the age of 86.
He was born November 22, 1947, in Blytheville, Arkansas to James Lester Sloan and Elsie Pierce Sloan.
James grew up in Steele, Missouri and attended the Steele school system.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army. On July 4, 1966, in West Memphis, Arkansas he was inducted. He served in the Vietnam War and for his service and bravery received the Purple Heart. He received his honorable discharge in Fort Lewis, Washington on July 14, 1969.
On October 4, 1971, in West Memphis, Arkansas, he married the love of his life, Janet (Jan) Virginia Peterson.
James worked as a truck driver, working for Tomlin Trucking and later for the city of Caruthersville.
He was known for his love of the outdoors-loving both to hunt and to fish. He was also known for his very dry sense of humor. His greatest love was for his family which includes his wife, his son, daughter-in-law, and 2 granddaughters. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elsie Sloan, and 3 brothers, Charles Dorr, John Sloan, and Paul Dean Sloan.
He is survived by his wife, Jan Sloan of Caruthersville, MO, his son, James Lester (Jimmy) Sloan and his wife Marie of Braggadocio, MO, 1 brother, Robert Dorr, 2 granddaughters, bilgail Grace Sloan and Anna Claire Sloan, many other relatives and many, many friends.
A visitation for Mr. Sloan was held on Sunday, August 7, 2016 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the H.S. Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Caruthersville, Missouri followed by cremation.
