Federal Officials say Lockhart, Texas balloon crash which killed 16 adults, worst in U.S. history

All 15 passengers met the balloon operator, Alfred G. "Skip" Nichols, in the San Marcos, TX Wal-Mart parking lot at about 5:45 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016 and traveled to the Fentress Texas Airpark. Balloon ground crew members told federal authorities with the National Transportation Safety Board that they launched about 20 minutes after the expected 6:45 a.m. time. The balloon was aloft for approximately one hour, traveling about 8 miles from takeoff to crash, and the basket was found about three-quarters of a mile from the balloon material itself. Evidence shows some part of the hot air balloon made contact with high-tension power lines, which are reported to be about 170 feet above the earth, before crashing into a Central Texas pasture near Lockhart, TX.
