He arrived in Ohio about 1788 via Pennsylvania and Kentucky. On 7 Feb. 1798 he settled in Franklin Township, Clermont Co., Ohio. In 1801 he was listed as appraiser of houses in Washington Twp, Clermont County. 1803 he appeared on a voting list in Clermont County, and was at that time Clerk of Elections. In 1804 he ran for sheriff.

In the 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830 U.S. census, he is listed in Franklin Twp, Clermont Co., Ohio; 1816 Joseph buys 214 acres in Clermont County and, in 1818, he sells three pieces of land each consisting of 48 acres.

In 1820 and 1823, he served as Justice of the Peace in Franklin Township.
