On a beautiful day in November, the 25th day in the year of 1965. A baby boy was born to Shirley James and Dewey Evans Jr. they named him Kevin Dwain James.

Kevin professed Christ at a young age. He loved the Lord and was united with the New Lincoln Missionary Baptist Church under the Leadership of the late Pastor A.R. Evans, Sr. As a child Kevin was a faithful and devoted, serving in the Youth Ministry as a choir member and a Junior Deacon, and attending Sunday School, Baptist Training Union, weekly Youth Meetings, but what he loved most was singing for the Lord and Outreach.

Kevin attended the Austin Independent School District and graduated from Johnston High School in 1984. Kevin served a tour in the U.S. Navy and was later employed by Travis County Transportation and Natural Resources until he retired in February 2014.

Kevin accepted his call to Ministry and preached his first sermon in June 1999. He united with the Freedom Home Baptist Church under the auspices of Pastor Oscar B. Howard Jr, and was Ordained into the Ministry on September 30, 2007. Kevin was a faithful and humble servant of Freedom Home Baptist Church, supporting Pastor Howard and the congregation whenever needed. He sang in the Sanctuary Choir and was a devoted member of the Elmo Carathers Male Chorus. He served as Superintendent of Sunday School, encouraging everyone to seek God and walk closely with Him.

As Kevin grew closer to the Lord, he understood that the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and because God was not only his Savior but also his Lord he answered when God chose for him a helpmate, a very dear and special friend from his youth Ms. Sandra Kay Coney. They were united in marriage October 6, 2007. Kevin and Kay were inseparable and they enjoyed serving the Lord together. Kevin was a great Father, PaPa, Brother, Uncle and Friend to all who knew him.

Kevin and Sandra united with the St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church in September 2010, under the auspices of Dr. B.J.E. McQueen. As a servant of St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church, Minister James encouraged all to be students of the Word and to seek God first. Minister James served as Education Coordinator, sang in the Choir, served on the Praise Team and taught Sunday School. He always had a smile and words of encouragement. He served St. Stephens faithfully until his health failed. Kevin was committed to the kingdom of God, encouraging others until he could no longer speak.

Minister James is preceded in death by his mother Shirley Carathers; his grandmother Corene Jackson-Carruthers; uncles Charles James and Kenneth James; and mother-in-law Oddie B. Scott.

He leaves to cherish his memory wife Sandra Kay James; fathers Vernon Carathers (Marion) and Dewey Evans Jr. (Camelita); daughter Keidra (Tyrone); sons Doshon (Curjuane), Devon, and Dustin (Veronica); sisters Erin (Jose), Ebony, Verneita, Rhonda, Sonia (Charles), Kendra, Chemeika, Joycelyn and Jennifer; brothers Michael, Vernon Jr. and Dewey Evans III (Diamond); and his beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A visitation will take place Friday, August 24, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, at St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church in Austin.
