Katherine is the daughter of German immigrants, Valentine and Kate Kurtzeman. She immigrated to the United States from LeHavre, France on the Nuremberg and arrived in Texas on October 29, 1860 with her parents and sister, Caroline, and brother, Charley.

Katherine's parents had three more children after arriving in Texas:
Cecilia Kurzemann (1862-1939)
Emilie Kurzemann (1867-bef 1900)
John Valentine Kurtzemann (1868-1948)

Caroline and Cecilia never married.
Charley married Anna Bertha Bettie Boedeker about 1886. Together they had three children.

She obtained her U.S. Citizenship in 1868 about the age of eight according to the 1910 census of Fayette County, Texas.

Katherine married William Christiansen on January 6, 1880 in Colorado County, Texas by R. Jaeggli, a Lutheran minister.

Four children were born to their union:

1) Emilia Christiansen Stolle (1882-1971)
2) Lena Christianson Bryan (1884-1951)
3) Amelia Henrietta 'Jettie'Christianson Tyler (1886-1976)
4) Edwin John Christianson (1888-1984)

After Williams death, Katherine married Bernard Ben Fehmer about 1891 in Texas. Together they had the following children:

1) Anna Fehmer Perkins (1892-1981)
2) Marie C. Fehmer DeBall (1894-1969)
3) Emma Frances Fehmer Flanagan (1895-1975)
4) Henry Bernard Fehmer (1897-1969)

Bernard died on December 18, 1897 leaving Katherine a widow with a year old baby, seven of her children to raise plus Ben's five children from his first marriage:
