On January 7, 1931, John Cleary and James Ryan were working a plain clothes detail and were investigating a robbery. They had located one suspect who took them to the room of the second suspect. The second man was found hiding in a closet. He opened fire, killing Ryan and paralyzing Cleary (the bullet severed his spine). He died of his wounds on January 4, 1938 ,at the age of thirty-eight.
