Jill Ellen Wood, the daughter of Dr. Robert “Bob” Victor Wood, Sr. and Lillian Elaine Merrill, was born on 7 April 1963 in Huntsville, Madison Co., AL. Her siblings include Robert “Bob” Victor Wood, Jr.; Jennifer “Jenny” Jo (Wood) Taylor; and Kristen Joan “Joani” (Wood) Williams.

Jill attended Blossomwood Elementary and Huntsville Junior High, and was a member of the the Huntsville High School Class of 1981, and graduated in 1985 from Florida State University, where she received a B.S. in Leisure Services and Studies with a Recreation Management emphasis.

Formerly the Recreation Supervisor for the Guntersville Recreation Department and the 1990 “Young Careerist” of the Guntersville Business and Professional Women’s Club, Jill cofounded Huntsville’s “The Valley Planet,” an alternative newspaper, in 2003, and within a few years, became its sole Publisher and chief Editor, a position she retained thereafter.

Her promotion of the arts—particularly our own area’s art scene—is inestimable, particularly in the wake of the diversion of newsprint conglomerates away from a local focus and their headquartering and centralization in cities removed – often far removed – from their readers and the communities they are said to serve.

Over thirteen years, the “Valley Planet” routinely appeared in Huntsville, Decatur, Athens, Madison, Guntersville, Scottsboro, Hazel Green, and Fayetteville.

It is Jill’s magnum opus. Through it, area writers were accorded a freedom in their creative process that is not only rare, but in these days of skyrocketing print costs, basically unheard of.

Jill’s quote in her senior annual: “Mischief is where you find it, especially if she is behind it.”
