The Newell Mirror - Thu, Mar 31, 1927 - Grandmother Doretta Witter was the daughter of August Offer and was born Feb 1, 1849 in Celle, Hanover, Germany. Her mother having died, she was reared and confirmed in Hermannsburg by the Rev Louis Harms, the great leader in missionary work. After her confirmation she returned to Celle and there in 1877 she was married to William Witter, a widower and became a loving mother to his three children.
In 1880 she came to America with her husband and three children and settled on a farm near Newell. In 1905 her husband died and with the help of the children she managed everything well.
In March 1912 she was married to Frank Witter, a brother of her first husband who had come to Newell before her. With him she lived happily until his death in 1917. She then moved to into Newell and resided here ever since until her death.
During the last few years she was considerably troubled with rheumatism and was for the greater part of the time confined to her home. She was also troubled with strangulated hernia for which she underwent an operation a few weeks ago from which she rallied. Later it became necessary for her to undergo another operation which was performed last Thursday afternoon and for a time it was thought she would recover but the shock proved too great and she passed away peacefully and quietly on March 24th at the age of 78 years, 1 month, and 23 days.
She leaves one son, 13 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the home Sunday afternoon, thence to St Peters Lutheran church. Interment was made in the Newell cemetery.
