Abner Brown was born in Big Lake, MN, son of Joseph and Julia (St. Cyr) Brown. Per his obituary, at the age of 18 he went to Texas and Mexico working at the railroad, later traveling to S. America and eventually being a conductor on the Quito-Guayaquil line. He contracted yellow fever and later malaria. Despite treatment at the Zacapa Hot Springs in Guatemala, in November 1914 he went to New Orleans to be treated in the hospital there. He died there on April 2, 1915, and per his last wish was brought to Big Lake and interred in Big Lake Cemetery.
