He served as a Seabee and a carpenter during the Korean conflict. He was stationed in California and Navasta Argentia Newfoundland, neat St John Newfoundland. He received the National Defense Service Award.
Named simply W.T., (Pronounced Dub-T) as his father had another son that died in WWII - Walter Theo Kelly, Jr. - He didn't want to name another son with the same name, so he just gave him initials instead. that was legal at the time of his birth.
Died of lung cancer in Oakdale, Louisiana, at 71, and although he smoked to the day he died, the doctors found that the disease was most probably caused by working so many years with the asbestos pots on the pipeline jobs.
Worked most of his life as construction on pipelines around the world. Loved to fish and play poker.
He lies at rest on the left side of his father and mother under the shade of an old cypress tree in the Cryer Cemetery just south of Oakdale, Louisiana.
He is survived by his daughter, Louise Kelly Leblanc of Lake Charles,La and his son Benny Shane Kelly of Hayes, La.
On January 12, 2017, a US NAVY Veterans memorial plaque was installed at the foot of his vault for his service in the Korean Conflict era. The date conflicts with his birth certificate, as he was born on January 2nd, and the Navy records indicated January 3rd.
