The following obituary appeared at the Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery (Indianapolis, IN) site:

Barbara E. (Lipp) McDaniel died on 23 December 2020 at approximately 1:30pm EST. Barbara was born on 10 April 1937 to Charles John Lipp and Elizabeth Louise Schultz in Manhattan, New York. Barbara attended grade school in Flushing, New York. Her parents moved to Savannah, Georgia when Barbara was in high school to run the Goodnight Motor Court. After graduation from high school Barbara attended Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. While at Purdue Barbara met Charles (Richard) R. McDaniel. After graduation Barbara secured a job at Eli Lilly incorporated in Indianapolis and married Charles R. McDaniel on 26 January 1958. Barbara and Charles were married for 53 years until Richard died in 2012. Both lived in Indianapolis their entire lives. In later years, when her children were grown, Barbara earned a university degree in Math and Computer Science from Marian College in Indianapolis. After graduation from Marian College Barbara was employed by Ivy Tech in Indianapolis and worked to integrate Ivy Tech with the other state universities, retiring at age 60.

Barbara had two children, Kenneth C. McDaniel and Eileen B. (McDaniel) Fetherson and quit working to take care of her children when Kenneth was born. Barbara has four grandchildren, Gerald D. Fetherson and William C. Fetherson, Ian K. McDaniel and Katherine E. McDaniel. Barbara is survived by her son, Kenneth C. McDaniel, his partner Anne M. Weinkauf, and her grandchildren. Her daughter Eileen B. Fetherson died in January 2018.

Barbara had many interests including a love for classical music and enjoyed all types of plants, maintaining indoor plants and a patio of plants. Often the plants filled the entire sunroom and patio. Barbara loved her house and nothing about her house from the design to the furniture and decorations were by accident. Barbara also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and was active in their activities. She was a good grandmother along with her husband taking her grandchildren often several days a week after they were out of school each day. Barbara also enjoyed yearly trips to the Algoma district of Canada and spent several weeks in a cottage on a lake. In the winter Barbara enjoyed visiting relatives in New Orleans at the holidays or being at home with her family.

Barbara will be sadly missed. She had lots of friends and was respected for her advice and intelligence. Barbara had a great sense of humor and was easy to get along with and shared many interesting stories of her life and observations. She was patient and always made the best of any situation. Barbara spent the remaining year of her life at Hooverwood Nursing Home in Indianapolis where it was reported that she was one of the favorite occupants. Personnel at Hooverwood would state that my mother always was a good listener and had something interesting to share.

Unfortunately, due to the extreme incompetence of the state and federal government in the management and handling of the plague (Covid 19) Barbara was unable to spend her last year with her family and friends. For her last year Barbara was mostly confined to her room only able to speak with friends and family on the telephone. Barbara did not die from the plague, but ramifications of the plague had a drastic impact on her life. In all this, Barbara was able to make the best of things. Barbara will be sadly missed and was a unique individual.
