Mary Mae Lee Wheatley, 94, of Oak Ridge departed her earthly life for a better place on Wednesday, July 20, 2016.

She was born June 27, 1922 in Tipton County, Indiana, the daughter of Roy and Virgil Lee.

Mary Mae was married to Seth Wheatley from a neighboring community in Tipton County September 18, 1942. They moved to Ok Ridge, TN in 1943 during the construction of the first Y-12 nuclear production building.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Mary Mae attended and enjoyed all the Clinton, and later, Oak Ridge Lions Club activities with her husband. She was also an active tennis player for many years.

Her two main loves were her volunteer work with the Methodist Medical Center for 32 years and music. She loved her church and sang in church choirs most of her life and also with the Sweet Adeline's. She played trumpet in the Oak Ridge Community Bank for seven years, alongside of her husband. She had many interests and a great love for her family, friends and associates.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Wilmer Lee.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Seth Judson Wheatley; son, William Lewis Wheatley and his companion Becky Chastain of Oak Ridge; daughter, Nora Charlene Shade of Karns; sister, Betty Lou Pennington of Vancouver, WA and her daughter Madeline Mesplay; 4 grand children; 2 step-grandchildren; 3 great grand children and 2 step-great grandchildren and 2 great-great-grand children.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 25, 2016 from 11 am – 1 pm at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will begin at 1 pm with Rev. Jenny Caughman officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family asks that any memorials in Mary Mae's name be made to a favorite charity of choice.
