She was born in Norwich, on Dec. 15, 1922, to the late Herbert and Lucy (Standish) Bushnell.
On Aug. 20, 1943, in Norwich, she was wed to her beloved husband, James F. Abbott Sr., who predeceased her.
Mabel focused her life as a homemaker and caring for her family but also worked outside the home part time as an accountant at various businesses. With love and compassion to share beyond her household, Mabel belonged to the Ledyard Senior Center where she volunteered in the local schools, as well as sang in the chorus and many other activities. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry were she belonged to the Ladies Guild and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, reading, doing crosswords and knitting.
She is survived by her sons, James F. Abbott Jr. (Jacquelyn) of Colchester, Edward F. Abbott (Sheree) of Brooklyn; a daughter, Nancy Thomas (Paul) of Oakdale; her sister-in-law, Sylvia Bushnell of Lisbon; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Mabel was also predeceased by her brother, Earle Bushnell of Lisbon; her sister, Joan Belliveau of Norwich; and her granddaughter, Barbara Abbott of East Hampton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1650 Route 12, Gales Ferry, with burial immediately following at Gales Ferry Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at Church & Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich.
Donations in her memory may be made, in lieu of flowers, to Fairview Oddfellows Nursing Home, 235 Lestertown Road, Groton, CT 06340.
