Second son and fourth child of Elizabeth Craig and John Simpson, Jr.

John was a triplet, born with sister, Joan ("Ann") and sister, Elizabeth.

Their birth record reads: John Simpson, mason, no. 8 West Adam Street, and Elizabeth Craig, his spouse, had triple children born on the third day of Feb 1831; viz. a daughter named Joan, a son named William Paul, and a daughter named Elizabeth. They were christened on 22 Mar 1831.

At three months old, his death record reads: William Paul Simpson, son of John Simpson, died 12 May current at No. 8 West Adam Street. Interned 15 May 1831. Buried 9 foot straight south of William Wilkins stone mid area. Age 3 months. Cause of disease - not known.

William's sister, Joan, frequently known as Joan Ann or more often as "Ann" survived, immigrated to America and died in Eden, Utah 22 March 1869.

His sister, Elizabeth lived at least until age 20, where, (in the 1851 census of Scotland, Edinburgh St Cuthberts, 685/2, enumeration district (ED) 71, page 12, Elizabeth Simpson household), she is found with all the family living as follows: at 2/2 Roxburgh Street in St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Elizabeth is listed as head, female, widow, age 50, keeps a mangle and born in Prestonpans, Haddington. Also living in this household are: William Boyle, son-in-law, married, male, age 24, Taylor (sic, tailor), born in Edinburgh, Midlothian; Jane Boyle, daughter, married, female, age 23, Taylor’s wife, born in Edinburgh, Midlothian; Ann Simpson, daughter, unmarried, female, age 20, envelop folder, born in Edinburgh, Midlothian; Elizabeth Simpson, daughter, unmarried, female, age 20, envelop folder, born in Edinburgh, Midlothian; John Simpson, son, unmarried, age 16, male, printer compositor apprentice; born in Edinburgh, Midlothian; John Russell, grandson, male, age 6, scholar at home, born in Edinburgh, Midlothian; Elizabeth Boyle, granddaughter, female, age 2, born in Edinburgh, Midlothian; and Christina Boyle, granddaughter, female, 11 months old, born in Edinburgh, Midlothian.

In the years between the triplets' births and 1837, the mother, Elizabeth Craig Simpson, had given birth to two more sons, and a set of twin daughters, all except one did not survive infancy:
John was born in 1833 and survived only seven months and one week. John Craig Simpson, born in November of 1834, lived to marry Margaret Pennycook and have at least 8 children. Twins, Agnes and Helen Maxton, lived only eight months, and three years, respectively.

In 1852, William's mother, Elizabeth Craig Simpson and sister "Ann" immigrated to America.

The triplet sister, Elizabeth, immigrated in 1855.
