Motion Picture Director, Screenwriter, Producer. He shall be remembered for directing the Academy Award associated film "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1985). The picture earned William Hurt an Oscar for Best Actor and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. He was initially interested in pursuing a career in Existentialism, prior to immigrating to Brazil in 1969. However, he would be captivated by filmmaking and began directing shorts and later commercials, before having success with the feature "King of the Night" (1975). He helped bring Brazil's film industry to new life with the internationally-acclaimed picture "Pixote" (1981). Off the success of "Kiss of the Spider Woman", he directed Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep in "Ironweed" (1987), which earned both Academy Award nominations for their performances. This was followed with "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" (1991) and "Foolish Heart" (1998). He abandoned Hollywood and returned to his native Brazil to direct "Carandiru" (2003), which he also co-penned the screenplay and produced. He directed and wrote the film "My Hindu Friend" (2015). He died from a heart attack.
