Johannes was born in Langen-Bergheim Germany. Records of his birth are noted in the Eckartshausen Parish records in the "Familienbuch" = Family book, of which Langen-Bergheim is a part. He married Anna Marie Becht in 1835. They had six children born in Germany of which 3 died in infancy. He immigrated with 2 of his children and his wife Anna Maria nee Becht in 1852 which is also shown in the parish records. The immigration records confirm this. Family letters say the reason for leaving Germany were the near famine conditions and the "petty despotism of those times in Germany, with rulers maintaining themselves in power and their people in subjugation by armies of forced conscripts". The family settled in Erie County New York near Buffalo.
