Soldier. Fought in the battles of Arras and Third Ypres in World War One. Commanded the 5th Infantry Division of the British Army from 1938 up until the evacuation of British troops at Dunkirk. He then took over as Commander of VIII Corps in 1940, took command in Northern Ireland in 1941 and from 1943 was Commander-in-Chief, Home Forces.
