Joe K. Garner departed Lubbock on July 8, 2016 by invitation of his savior, Jesus Christ, to take up residence at his home in the Land of Eternal Day. He was welcomed by his parents, Howard and Gladys Garner, his brothers Howard and Jim Garner, and his sister, Susie Garner Cruzan, his mother-and-father-in law, Mac and Jo McClanahan and many other friends and loved ones. He was accompanied by a small white dog who adores him.

Joe was born in Shamrock, Oklahoma on January 12, 1936 to Howard and Gladys Garner. He was assisted with his arrival by Cherokee medicine man, Dr. Orange Starr. Joe was always proud to be a "Starr-Brand" Baby. He grew up in Drumright, where his father, Howard was a barber for many years.

He graduated from Drumright High School, where he played basketball and football. As a matter of record, he thought he looked most handsome in his football uniform, but his true love was for the hoops. This passion took him to Abilene Christian College (now ACU) on a basketball scholarship, where he majored in Bible and Marketing. He was also a Charter Member of the Galaxy Club.

After graduation from ACU he followed in the footsteps of his big brothers, Howard Duane (USN) and Jim (USAF) and enlisted in the United States Navy. He Bible studies aboard his ship and played semi-pro basketball on the Navy team. Many of his fondest memories were of his time in the service of his country.

Joe met Diane McClanahan, the love of his life in Corsicana, Texas in 1961, and they were married there on September 3, 1962. He believed that next to his decision to follow Jesus, marrying his love was the best decision he ever made. In his words, "If I had searched the whole world over for all the days of my life, I could have never found anyone more perfect for me". She was his soul mate and best friend. They would have celebrated 54 years of marriage September 3, 2016.

Joe was a member of Sunset Church of Christ, where he led singing and taught the Parlor Bible Study Class for many years. He was a former member of the Lubbock Rotary Club and the Corsicana Lion's Club. He was a DPS Certified Hand Gun Licensing Instructor. At one time, he was a member of the Singing Plainsmen Barbershop Singers. He was a voracious reader, Bible scholar, and an ace at crossword puzzles. He was born into a Wahoo-playing family and was also a Chicken Foot Dominoes shark. He was occasionally known to cheat (secretly) at Chicken foot just to get Aunt Jean riled up because she didn't know why he always won. It is unknown whether he will continue to do this in heaven. Aunt Jean - please take note.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Garner, his daughters, Lisa Garner and Shannon Garner Tumlinson; his granddaughters (who were his pride and joy) - Jennifer Tumlinson Ostasiuk and son-in -law, Mark, and Heather Tumlinson Hanna; and by his much-loved sister, Myrldene Garner Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Noah, Kylie, Greyson and Carson. Many nieces and nephews grieve his passing as well. Leave the light on for us, Joe- we will all be with you before the blink of an eye. Mother requests that you have a pecan pie waiting.

Celebration of Life services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Combest Family Memorial Chapel.

His family wishes to thank loving caretakers Heather, Lisa, Shannon, Franziska, Lenore and Megan for their gifts of love, strength and hope, and express our gratitude to Interim Hospice Care.
