"James (Jim) C. Garner, age 81, long-time Fort Worth resident, passed away on September 1, 2011 in Coleman, Texas.@ Memorial service will be held at Western Hills Church of Christ in Fort Worth on Saturday, September 24th at 2:00 p.m.

"Jim was born October 16, 1929 in Calico Rock, Arkansas, a son of Howard Thomas Garner and Gladys Burns Garner.@ He grew up in Drumright, Oklahoma where he attended school.@ Following high school graduation, he attended Harding College (now University)@in Searcy, Arkansas, where he met JoAnn Pickens, the love of his life.@ They were married on January 7, 1952 in Searcy.@

"Following their marriage, they moved to the San Francisco Bay area where Jim was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base. They eventually settled in Concord, California until moving to Fort Worth in 1969, where he was the general agent for Penn Mutual. Life Insurance Company for many years. He later became a stockbroker, ultimately retiring in 2007.@ Jim was an active member of the Western Hills Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School classes, led singing and formed the churchfs singing group the Joyful Noise.@ He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club.@ In 2010, Jim and JoAnn moved to Coleman, Texas to be near their daughter.@ JoAnn passed away on August 15, 2011.

"A most loving husband and father, he also had a special bond with his grandsons, known to them as De-Daddy. A loyal brother and uncle and dedicated servant of the Lord, Jim loved to sing, tell stories and make others laugh. His life-long romance with JoAnn lasted through the difficult years of her dementia, his devotion to her never faltering.
He is survived by two daughters, Judith (Jude) Garnier of Austin, and Susan (Sue) Sloan and husband Tommy of Coleman; two grandsons, Tanner and Brent Sloan of Austin; one brother, Joe Garner and wife Diane of Lubbock; one sister, Myrldene Smith of Kingston, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.

"He was preceded in death by his wife, one brother, Howard Garner; one sister, Susie Cruzan.

"The family suggests memorials be made to Holiday Hill Nursing Home, Coleman County Medical Center or to your favorite charity."
