Levi Hatheway was born September 22, 1788 in Bennnington, Vermont to Levi Hatheway (1751 - 1824) and Esther Hawley (1754 - 1843) whom are buried at Woods Hill Cemetery, Swanton, Vermont. Levi Hatheway Jr. enlisted in the War of 1812 on September 27, 1813. He was a volunteer rifleman and served at the Battle of Plattsburg, New York. He moved out west in 1833 and first stayed in Summit, Ohio. In the 1850's he moved to Jackson County, Iowa. On February 9, 1815 he married Betsey Mather (1794 - 1871) in Warren, Washington Co., Vermont. She was the daughter of the revolutionary war surgeon, Dr. Eleazar Mather and his wife, Irene Sterling Mather.
They had seven children.
