Edward “Ed” Sharp, 85, of Marshalltown passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama, Iowa, with loving family by his side.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on July 11, 2016, at Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post# 839 and by American Legion Posts in the Marshalltown area.

Edward Robert Sharp was born on September 13, 1930, in Atchison, Kansas to Edward and Velma (Cohoon) Sharp. He received his education in Atchison, Kansas and after high school he had a full ride scholarship to Washburn University for football and track. After college Ed served his country honorably in the United States Navy from March 1949, until 1952 and then he was recruited for the track team to throw the Javelin on the Atchison, Kansas police force for 2 years. On November 29, 1952, Ed was united in marriage to Betty Parsley in Atchison, Kansas; he later married Sally (Zimmerman) Rowley on November 23, 1981. He worked for Swift and Company from 1955, to 1966, and then transferred to Marshalltown. He retired from Swift and Company in 1992, and then worked for the City of Marshalltown from 1992, until 2014. He had umpired for 36 years for the Amateur Softball Association, was Deputy Umpire in Chief for Iowa ASA from 1980 to 1985 and Umpire Chief for Iowa ASA from 1985 to 2006, and was well known in Central Iowa for refereeing and umpiring football, basketball, baseball, and softball. He also played fast pitch softball for Swift and Company and the Marshalltown Traveling Team. He received the Elite Umpire status with the Amateur Softball Association of American in 2003, was inducted into the Iowa Amateur Softball Association Men’s Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in 2004, was inducted into the Iowa Amateur Softball Association Men’s 16” Hal of Fame in 1986, was a Charter Member of the Amateur Softball Association Indicator Fraternity in 1986, and became a member of the Amateur Softball Association Medals program in 2000.

Ed was a member of the American Legion Post 46 and has served as Trustee for the Hope United Methodist Church from 2007, and 2008. He had resided at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama from April 2015 to July 6, 2016. While there he received excellent care. All the staff was caring and attentive to his every need.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Sally Sharp of Marshalltown, two sons, David (UnSuk) Sharp of Santa Maria, CA; Steve Sharp (Stacie) of Oregon, Missouri; four stepchildren, Mary Helen Schumann of Olive Branch, Mississippi; Kevin(Marcia Roll) Rowley of Grundy Center, Iowa, Deborah Beem of Marshalltown; Diana (Dave) Swanson of Marshalltown, 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

In death Ed rejoins his parents, Edward and Velma.

Funeral Services for Edward "Ed" Sharp, Jr., 85, were held Monday, July 11, 2016, at Hope United Methodist Church with Pastor Nan Smith and Pastor Greg Ellcey officiating. Mr. Sharp was laid to rest in the Riverside Mausoleum with Military Honors provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #839 and by American Legions Posts in the Marshalltown area.

Pallbearers were Chris Stephenson, Garrett Stephenson, Amy Brown, Josh Swanson, Alyson Rowley, Jacob Rowley, Heather Bagnall, Blake Way, Jacky Sharp and Grace Sharp.

Honorary Pallbearers were Bill Van Kirk, Bud (Carl) Antle and Ed's great grandchildren.

Groups attending represented Sunny Hill Care Center, Iowa ASA Umpires, Women Legion Golfing of Marshalltown, HyVee, Hope United Methodist Church, Premier Office Supply, Hospice Compassus and Classmates.
