Gwendolyn Ann Schmelling
(1920 - 2016)

Gwen, born February 28, 1920 in Wabeno, Wisconsin, went to be with the lord on October 18, 2015 at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Frieda Gerl, her loving husband, 'Web' Wilbert, and honored son, Dean. She is survived by her only sister Clare Jean Pawlowski of Wisconsin, Dean's wife, Norma of Texas. Marlene, daughter, and Nelson. Clay, son, and Victoria, and their family Hilda, Evelyn, Jed and his daughter Penda.

As a child, she loved to read, play the piano, and spend time with her family. She attended business college in Crandon. Gwen moved to New York to work when Web entered the Navy. When his ship moved to the Pacific, she moved to San Francisco where they were married in 1942. After the war, they had three children in Richmond, and in 1956 an advancement brought them to Sacramento. She hosted events in their home to welcome foreign exchange students. The family built a cabin and many fond summers were spent there as well as family trips to Wisconsin for reunions. She completed an art degree and created fine oil and water color paintings. With her daughter, they made stained windows for their home as well as commissioned pieces.

Gwen dreamed of traveling the world and they did just that, including visits to Israel. She and Web took time to visit the great artists' works, natural wonders and architecture of the world. They often stayed in youth hostels and made friends for life. Several of their trips included missionary work.

Gwen will be remembered for her love of God, life and family, healthy food, gardening, travel, nature, art, singing, and laughing. She lived a full, grateful, and blessed life.

Service will be held on Friday, April 29, 2016,10:00 at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620. Family will gather afterward in Sacramento.
