Literary Figure. She was the subject of G.W. Johnson's poem "When You and I Were Young, Maggie." Johnson met her while teaching in the Binbrook, Ontario, Canada area, and fell in love with her. She contracted Tuberculosis (at that time, a fatal disease), and Johnson wrote the poem about the future they wouldn't have together. After she succumbed to the disease at the age of 23, Johnson had his friend J.A. Butterfield put his poem to music, and soon the new song was a huge hit all over North America. The song that was inspired by Margaret Johnson has been recorded hundreds of times, and is still being recorded today.
