Wilson Ruffin Abbott (1801–1876)
Born to a Scotch-Irish father and a free Negro mother in Richmond, Virginia, Abbott at age 15 worked as a boat steward on the Mississippi River.
Ellen married Wilson Ruffin Abbott. They lived in Mobile Alabama for a time and also in New York, then moved to Upper Canada in 1835 or 1836. Wilson Abbott started buying up real estate. He owned 48 properties by 1871 and also became active in politics.
Anderson Ruffin Abbott, (7 April 1837 – 29 December 1913) their bright son was able to receive a proper education. He attended William King’s school in the black settlement of Buxton, near Chatham, Ontario and was an top on his class at the Toronto Academy. He later attended Oberlin College in Ohio. When he returned home to Canada he graduated from the Toronto School of Medicine in 1857. He matriculated in medicine that year at the University of Toronto and then studied under Alexander Thomas Augusta, a fellow black physician. Abbott received his medical licence to practise in 1861, and became the first Canadian-born black doctor.
